Belgian Malinois: The Dog That Took Down Osama Bin Laden?.

In light of the events that unfolded early this week and yesterdays breaking news that a “SEAL Dog” was a member of the elite team of U.S.  operators that shot and killed the piece of  shit known as Osama Bin Laden I would graciously like to  thank those in our military for their unwavering call to duty.

It was 10 years ago that our country was attacked.  Not only were buildings & planes destroyed, but thousands of innocent Americans lost their lives.  Let us never forget and let us not stop with the death of  Bin Laden.  Let us hunt every terrorist foreign and domestic  and bring them to JUSTICE!

Support Your Local Zoo!

I know at times the debate on zoos is a hot topic of debate between animal rights and animal welfare activists.  The animal rights activists feeling strongly against zoos and the animal welfare activists feelings falling on the opposite side of the spectrum.   With this being said I find myself supporting the plight of zoos.  Without being said the animals that are in captivity must be well cared for, provided more than adequate shelter and medical treatment.  I realize that there are some zoos that don’t fit the bill and basically are in the business to make money first and foremost.  These operations should be shut down and the animals transferred to better facilities where the animals can live out lives with better care.

The zoos I support are institutions like the Nashville Zoo or the Lehigh Valley Zoo where care and living quality appear to be the institutions first priority.  I have been to both and speaking from my personal observations both zoos provide excellent care to both its animal inhabitants and its human visitors.  Both of these facilities provide natural habitat enclosures for their animal

inhabitants while giving the animals the animals private areas as well.  Both facilities provide educational programs such as opportunities for close encounters with the animals.  In my mind no other type of institution can promote or can connect the child / animal bond like a zoo.  These facilities however depend on not only state and government funding but public funding as well.  The public arena is where we have to assume responsibility.

I encourage people to purchase memberships, donate and just as important visit your local zoo often.  Without our support we may lose some of these educational treasures before we know it.

Exotic Pets: Reptiles

April 30, 2011 Leave a comment

Not to long ago I had the opportunity to visit a reptile show in Berks County, Pennsylvania.  For the most part the show was well run and informative.  By the demographics of the attendees it was easy to determine that people from all racial groups and all walks of like life seem to enjoy reptiles.  The demographics of the attendees wasn’t the only thing that was varied.  At the show I found that you could purchase anything from a small soft shell turtle to large constrictor snakes and even venomous snakes as well.  VENOMOUS!  WTF!  The only thing worse they having the ability to buy a venomous snake was the ease in which it could be done.

While walking around the isles of the show I and my 3-year-old son came across a table with small containers containing baby snakes.  On some of the containers were red tape.  To my amazement I discovered all of the containers with red tape contained venomous snakes such as various Rattlers, Bush Vipers, Copperheads and yes, even a freaking Cobra.  Really, I mean REALLY!  I asked the gentleman manning the table what documents or professional licenses are needed to own a venomous snake in PA? His reply was that PA doesn’t require any permits or qualifications to buy a venomous snkae and as long as I had the money to pay for it I would be able to take it home with me that day.  Needless to say, no I didn’t purchase one, and no I don’t advocate doing so either.

I’m fascinated by the fact that in PA,  it’s illegal to sell & purchase a Sugar Glider, a harmless marsupial,  but you can purchase a reptile that can kill you within minutes.  Not only PA, but the country in general has to come to their senses with owning exotic animals. Thankfully it looks like Senator Richard Alloway of PA is looking to propose legislation that would regulate the ownership of the American Alligator and Venomous Snakes in PA.  I have included a link below to the PDF file that describes Senator Alloway’s intentions.

Wake up people.  Lets use good judgement when it comes to owning exotic animals.  Make sure the cool factor doesn’t become the reason you decided to purchase an exotic animal.
